From the Principal

Dear Parent and Friends,

The 'Love in a Bag' drive surpassed all of our expectations and the generosity of our families at Star of the Sea truly shone as a beacon of hope for the future. Last week the SRC students were asked to come along to the meeting with the items they had collected as a class. The children arrived at the Staff Room with basket loads of items and then left to go back for more. After several trips back and forth the Staff Room was full of gloves, beanies, socks, band aids, packets of tooth paste and tooth brushes, 'wet ones', tins of hot chocolate, coffee and tea bags and much more.

Thank you to everyone who supported the children and helped to make a difference to those doing it rough this winter. Our school value of compassion was alive, in action and put into practice this week. Heartfelt thanks to all of our families. In addition to 'Love in a Bag' initiative the SRC's 80s casual day raised $563 that will also go to the 'Love in Bag' drive and enable the organisers to purchase top up goods where needed. Well done everyone, I was so proud of you all.

safety alert

Students and families are reminded to be wary of approaches from strangers, especially when they are unaccompanied or travelling to and from school. If they are approached students should not respond and should not accept offers of rides or gifts.

Students should seek the assistance of other nearby adults if they feel unsafe and should report the event to a trusted adult (parent or school staff member) as soon as possible.

SAPOL advises that taking out a mobile phone and calling police can deter the offender and they recommend the student making a formal report to their closest police station.

Love in a Bag

Thank you for your kindness in supporting this SRC initiative. If we can all do a little it makes so much difference. The 80s casual day was also a great success and a lot of fun, raising $563 for Love in the Bag.

Have you heard of the ripple effect? One small smile can lead to another smile, or a small act of kindness and so on it goes. Recently with my broken arm in its cast I came across a man who had dropped something. He was in a wheelchair. I stopped to help him, but didn’t have enough dexterity to pick up the item and dropped my own jacket, so someone else stopped to help and we all ended up having a jolly good laugh! I don’t know what the other shoppers in Rundle mall must have thought.

The Nativity of St John the Baptist
Luke 1:57-60

When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son.  Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.

JOHN THE BAPTIST played a unique role in the history of God’s people. He acted as the bridge between the Hebrew and Christian Testaments. He basically belongs to the former but was present at the beginnings of the latter. At the same time he died before Jesus had completed his work and before the Church came into existence.

From the Deputy Principal

Hello Friends

It’s hard to believe that this is the second to last instalment of newsletters for this term and that next week sees us ‘tip’ over into the second half of the year. I hope that you are managing stay warm at this time of the year and that you have managed to be ‘cough and cold’ free. It was terrific to see so many dads and Friends at the Sportmans Night on 15 June. There were some great stories to be heard and shared and plenty of laughs had. Thanks to Ryan Scott for his hard work in coordinating the night and to everyone for their support of the evening and our school.

New Child Care Package

I remind and urge families to visit www.education.gov.au/childcare and make the switch over to the new Child Care Package as soon as they can so you are ready for the new system from day one. It is now less than a month before the new Child Care Package comes into effect. Driving to school this week, I heard constant radio reminders stating that only 30% of families across Australia have completed necessary forms to facilitate this. After talking to Laura Artis at OSHC, this matches our school profile. Please tend to this as a matter of urgency, as I can just imagine how difficult it is going to be for parents to make a claim under the new system without the forms being lodged.

What do you need to do to be ready for the New Child Care Package?

  1. Sign into your Centrelink online account through myGov
  2. Select Complete your Child Care Subsidy assessment task
  3. Work through the steps to provide new information and confirm your current details
  4. Get ready for the new Child Care Subsidy. Get online now. From 2nd July 2018, the child care fee assistance your family receives will change.

Your information does not automatically rollover to the new system and you may not receive any subsidy if your assessment is not completed. Login now to complete your online form through myGov and to learn more about the new subsidy and how to transition.

Roof Fund Appeal LOGO.jpg

Parents will have noticed that the church roof was replaced recently. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish is extending an invitation to our families to consider contributing to the Parish Roof Fund via a donation. Donation forms are available from the front office. Star of the Sea School is a regular user of the Church for School Masses, assemblies, meetings and functions in the church hall. If families are in a position to donate, your contribution will be of great assistance to the Parish.
