Dear Parents and Friends,

I hope you are finding ways of keeping warm and dry during this chilly and wet weather. Term 3 is moving along very quickly and we find ourselves at the end of Week 4. As I visit classrooms I have been noticing some great teaching and learning happening. When I visit, I enjoy asking the children 'What are you learning?' or 'Why are you learning that?' It is a credit to our teachers and the children that they can always talk about their learning with interest and excitement.

Last week Matt Perry and I ventured out of school and spent three days in the Barossa Valley at the Catholic Primary Principal's Conference. As you can appreciate it's nice to be able to get away and mix with other principals and leadership teams. The learning and sharing of ideas is valuable and allows you to sense where your school sits with regard to teaching, wellbeing, community and spirituality.

Just about everyone has a mobile phone! I had my niece and nephew stay with us over the weekend and with a 15 year old girl and a 12 year old boy in the house there was a cacophony of intrusive ring tones and if they weren’t talking on the phone they were text messaging, checking social media or playing games on them. Mobile phones have become embedded into our lifestyles for better or for worse.

One continuing focus among researchers is the effect of mobile phones, together with emails and Facebook, Instagram etc. on relationships in society. Do these forms of communication enhance our lives? Do they always save time? Do they allow us to interact more meaningfully? Do they facilitate growth as individuals and as an interconnected community? My weekend experience reminded me of an article I read where the Anglican Archbishop of Westminster voiced his concerns that excessive use of emails and mobile phones is creating shallow friendships and undermining community life, he also said that popular social networking sites led young people to ‘transient relationships’, which put them at risk when relationships broke down. “Friendships are not a commodity, friendship is something that is hard work and enduring when it is right,” he told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. “I think there is a worry that an excessive use, or an almost exclusive use of text and emails means that as a society we’re losing some of the ability to build interpersonal communication that is necessary for living and building community.”

The School Board held its first meeting for Term 3 on Monday 13 August. The main items on the agenda consisted of:

• The School Strategic Plan 2018-2020 endorsement and presentation of the Annual Plan
• The Marine Discovery Centre refurbishment update
• Discussion of the Stage 1 Building Development
• School Finance Report

Joe presented to the Board a draft copy of the Annual Plan 2018/19. Joe asked the School Board to give feedback on the annual plan that will be used as a working document for school improvement and development for the remainder of 2018 and the first half of 2019. The School Board endorsed the new Strategic Plan 2018-2020 and asked that it be made available for parents via the school’s web page.

Hello Friends

What an exciting few weeks lay ahead of us. I was examining the school calendar the other day and a few things jumped out at me.  The Year 2 Family Mass this Sunday 19 August, Year Level Liturgies and Masses, the Book Week Fair, which is a fabulous opportunity to come into the library and peruse the books on display and perhaps make a purchase or two. Our Book Week Parade is scheduled for 9.15am in the Courtyard on Wednesday 29 August. The theme this year is ‘Find YourTreasure’. What is your treasure, what is of value to you?

Our Year 6 and Year 7 students take flight on 5 September to the Nation’s Capital, for the very first ever trip to Canberra for our Middle school students. 111 students and 11 staff will be in Canberra from 5 – 7 September and we are getting very excited indeed. 

There is also the Catholic Schools Music Festival to look forward to and support, Reception- Year 3 Swimming weeks, Photo Day on 14 September, not to mention our Music Show case in the church on 20 September and Art Show on 26 September.

Now that all makes for a jam packed remainder of term full of learning and excitement.

With farmers suffering through what many are calling the ‘worst drought in living memory’ SchoolAid has today launched its ‘Hay and Hampers for Hope’ campaign. The aim is for 10,000 schools to join together to raise 1 million dollars. The SRC have organised this casual day to support the appeal and are happy to accept all donations.

At Star of the Sea we will celebrate Book Week from Monday 27 August to Friday 31 August.

The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) brings children and books together to celebrate Australian children’s literature.

Australian authors and illustrators are recognised for their wonderful work and commitment to reading.

Book Week is a special time to celebrate all things books and reading.
The theme for this year is ‘Find Your Treasure’.

A treasure is something that is valued and important to us. Books can be treasures and all we need to do is find them!
Our students are encouraged to employ different strategies to discover their own book treasures.
