From the Deputy Principal

Deputy Principal for a Day

Hello my name is Liam McEgan and I was the Deputy Principal for a day on 26 November 2018, because my mum and dad won the silent auction at the 2018 school ball.

I had a fantastic day with Mr Perry. In the morning I had lots of jobs to complete. We looked at the architects’ plans for the new building and we had lots of planning to do for Carols Night. We made sure that the backdrops and tarps that the students will sit on were in good condition. After recess we had to hand out the Premiers Reading Challenge medals for 2018, which kept us busy as we moved from classroom to classroom around the school. After lunch we did the Staff Duty roster for 2019 and that took quite some time as we had to find a yard duty for all of the teachers in our school to do. The best part of the day for me was handing out the Premiers Reading Challenge medals as well as lunch and morning tea. I had an awesome day!

APRIM for the Day

I was very excited when my mum told me that I was going to be APRIM for a day.  Every day leading up to that day I was planning what I wanted to do. When the day came I was so excited. When I walked into the office Mrs Foley and I were wearing the same clothes and we didn’t even plan it. I’m not joking!

I was very surprised at how much work Mrs Foley had to do. It was so much fun. The best thing was that I could still hang out with my friends. They make me laugh. I had quite a few responsibilities and tasks to do. One was to organise and give out the Premier Reading medals and awards to classes.

The day was so enjoyable and a great learning experience.

May your Christmas gifts bring you blessings of peace, the beauty of hope and  the spirit of peace.

Prayer

There were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Lk 2: 8 – 12

Term 3 Intake

Next year Star of the Sea School, along with other Catholic schools will be offering a mid-year Reception enrolment intake at the start of Term 3. This intake will be for students enrolled and accepted for 2020.

The mid-year enrolment will enable children turning 5 between May 1 and October 31 to begin school in Term 3. These students will complete six terms of Reception. This intake is in addition to the regular intake at the beginning of the year where students complete a full year of Reception.

Parents will be able to decide whether their child is ready to begin mid-year when they turn five, or wait to enrol for the beginning of the following year.

Children who have four terms of Kindy and four terms of Reception and children who have two terms of Kindy and six terms of Reception will all have eight terms of early learning and will build strong foundations in learning and social emotional wellbeing.

A letter explaining the process is being sent to all 2020 families. If you have any questions please contact Vivian  DePalma in the front office.

Languagenut

Classes from Year 2 to Year 7 at Star of the Sea this year were introduced to the Languagenut digital resource for learning a language. Students were able to learn Italian vocabulary and then reinforce their knowledge in a variety of games. The programme allowed them to work at their own pace and on activities which they could choose, i.e. listening, speaking, reading or writing. Some students took exceptionally well to the programme and are photographed below.

The top scorers of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were two students in 2TR:

Lara D scored 139 Gold, 41 Silver and 13 Bronze medals – with a total of 1481 words learnt!

David scored 114 Gold and 3 Silver medals – with a total of 934 words learnt!

Congratulations to all students who participated. At one stage Star of the Sea School ranked 26th in the world out of all schools participating! This number varies throughout the year, given that the school year is different in the northern hemisphere. Sometimes it’s as much as 1500 schools!

Bravissimi tutti!   Well done everyone!

Principal for the Day

At the school ball, my parents were successful bidders to be 'Principal of the Day' - it was a very fun day being principal...!

Some of the things I did were:

  • Welcome the KESAB plastics conference to the MDC
  • I put up the Christmas tree and nativity set
  • I gave out the premiers reading challenge certificates and medals with deputy principal of the day and APRIM of the day
  • I had morning tea and lunch in the Staff Room
  • I helped to correct the 2019 teachers time table
  • I visited some classrooms to give out stickers for good work
  • And finally I announced that there was no homework on Thursday night

Overall, I had a great day being principal. It was fun and exciting - I would recommend giving it a go.

Acting Principal

From the Deputy Principal

Hello friends

It is hard to believe how quickly this year has gone and that we have arrived at our final instalment for the newsletter for this year

Carols Night 2018

We are all ready to go for this fantastic evening on the school calendar. Once again, as I have mentioned in previous newsletters please refrain from setting up picnic rugs or chairs on the oval before 2:45 pm. We need much of the day to set up and prepare the oval and we will have vehicles and trailers moving across the oval throughout the day so rugs and chairs will not be able to be placed out on the oval before this time. I thank you and appreciate your cooperation with this. The BBQ will be run by the Grange SLSC and soft drink will be available for purchase on the night as well. If you prefer a coffee, the coffee van will be set up at the rear of the oval. We are looking forward to a great night.

Last day for students at Star of the Sea for 2018

I remind families that the final day of school, for students for this school year is, Wednesday 12 December. Thursday 13 December is a school closure day where we will be moving classroom furniture throughout the school in preparation for the 2019 school year.

I wish to thank all our students, parents and families for a wonderful school year full of learning, collaboration, compassion, honesty, inclusivity and respect.

I wish all our families a blessed, happy and safe Christmas and look forward to welcoming all our families - both existing and new, to Star of the Sea School for 2019.

Capital Development 2019

Since 2016 and 2018 the School Board has been working with Edge Architect to develop a School Master Plan for the redevelopment of the School. As result of school consultation the Stage 1 project has identified the construction of new Reception classrooms in front of the Mercy Covent facing Military Road, the construction of a Multi-Purpose Room and Music Room on the ground floor, a disability lift giving access to the MacKillop classrooms and the widening and refurbishment of the MacKillop Building corridors and classrooms.

The Stage 1 plans have been lodged with the City of Charles Sturt Council and our neighbours have been notified of our plans to build.

The project is a $4.72million development and all things going well we will be heading out to tender in Term 1 2019 with a building completion date in November of next year.

We are excited about the new building and we are sure our families, children and staff will be impressed with the new purpose built facilities that will become a reality after many years of planning.

book a chat.jpg

Book a Chat Day Thursday 24 January 2019

Next year we have planned to offer parents an opportunity to call into school for a chat with your child’s teacher.

The aim of the chat will be to share with the teacher your child’s needs, strengths and interests before the school year commences.

Tomorrow information about how to make a time to meet with your teacher(s) will be sent home. Parents will be familiar with the process as it is similar to the way you have booked Parent/Teacher meetings.

The children are more than welcome to come along and be a part of the chat.

I hope as many families as possible will take advantage of this time to have a teacher chat.

A reminder that the school year concludes on Wednesday 12 December this year. This closure is to enable teachers to move classrooms.

Fourteen out of the eighteen classrooms required next year need to move. I trust parents understand that to move furniture and equipment with children at school is not ideal, hence the closure day.

Out of school hours care will be available for families who require care on the Thursday. Please contact Laura Artis via the school OSHC number 8115 7403 to book a place. Care will be offered regardless of numbers on the Thursday.
