Our school is holding a Colour Fun Run as our major fundraising event this year! The event will be held on Friday 27th September. This is a sponsorship based fundraiser and the children will be sponsored to not only complete jobs around the home as well as for their family and neighbours but also to run the Colour Fun Run in Week 10 of this term. The money raised will be going towards the Interactive Play Area that is under construction this year.
Please keep your eyes peeled for the sponsorship forms which were sent home with your child today after assembly. Once you have the form, jump online at schoolfundraising.com.au and create a student profile page. Once you do this and raise at least $1 online, you will be entered into the $20,000 Ultimate Family Experience Holiday draw.
Students who raise $10 or more will receive a reward, and the more money you raise the better the reward, and the more you help the school.
The School Colour Run is a healthy fundraiser that we hope you will get behind. The entire 6 weeks is reinforcing the message to students about having fun, helping others, working towards goals and living a healthy active life all while helping the school raise funds for our Interactive Play area.
We're looking for all students to participate and we're organising a great day for our community, so we'd love everyone to come down and support the kids.
If you have any questions about the Colour Run or setting up your Student Profiles please contact the front office or myself and we would love to get them answered for you.
Thanks for supporting the school and we hope to see you at the event.
A big thank you to Isabella Dragani,Chloe Riley and Matilda Grant for putting together the powerpoint presentation for the "Colour Fun Run" launch. Click her to view it.

From the Principal |
Dear Parents and Friends
It’s great to see the daylight hours increasing and the sun shining more often giving us warmer days. It also does the heart good to get home with some daylight to spare. August is one of my favourite times of the year, as we wait in expectation for the buds to burst into bloom. A lot is happening in nature and a great deal more is happening around our school, in classrooms, with the building program and with upcoming events like Book Week, Confirmations and Communions, and the Colour Fun Run. This week’s newsletter certainly reflects what a hive of activity Star of the Sea is.
Colour Fun Run
It's official! This year's major fund raising event will be the Colour Fun Run on 27th September 2019, the last day of Term 3. The Colour Fun Run will take the place of the bi-annual A-thon Day. This week a letter from Ros Stevens and I was sent home explaining the concept of the Colour Run. Attached to the letter was a Q & A sheet addressing some questions parents may have about the event. If you have any other questions please direct them to me and I will endeavour to answer them via a Colour Run Newsletter. Each child also received a Sponsorship Pack for parents with directions of how to create a profile page for your child/children. Whilst incentive prizes are being offered, the children are being encouraged to earn their sponsorship by doing chores in exchange.
Parents can choose to donate via QKR and not be involved in the incentive program or they can create a family profile where the family can work for incentive prizes together.
Please encourage the children to gather sponsors for the Colour Run. For every $10 raised the children will receive a ticket that will go into the draw for Principal, Deputy Principal and APRIM for a day.
More importantly all money raised from the Colour Run will directly benefit the children with all money raised going into the pool of money raised at last year's school ball for the new Imaginative Play space adjacent to the Nature Play area. This new play area will be a part of the new building program so we hope to be able to make a significant contribution to its completion.

Board Talk |
The School Board held its first meeting for Term 3 on Monday 12th August. A number of important items were on the agenda for Board discussion and consideration. The Finance Report was tabled as read and showed that the school’s finances remain in a healthy state. The cash at bank shows an increase on 2018 figures, this is due to not having to draw down on the capital project just yet and the timing of grants. All other areas of the school finances are in good order.
Joe presented the 5 Year Financial Plan to the Board and presented several scenarios for the annual increase in school fees for Board members to consider at the September meeting.
Andrew McEgan’s Capital Development report was tabled as read. Matters arising from the report focussed on three additional works to be included in the new building development. These include new guttering to the convent building, new ceilings and electrical work to the MacKillop upper floor classrooms and the Imaginative Play Space. The School Board gave an in principle agreement to proceed with these works with the approval from SACCS.

Parental influence the most important |
The British government has undertaken an extensive study of families and parents called the ‘Home Factor’. The study revealed that what parents do at home with their kids directly impacts on children’s achievement levels at school. The research findings in this study make five significant points that are worth sharing:
1. ‘At home’. It’s what happens in the four walls at home that counts.
2. Authoritative parenting. The study shows that it is important for parents to display authority and search for a balance between warmth and firmness in their child rearing. Disciplinary methods need to be supportive rather than punitive and aim for self-regulation. Authoritative parents influence rather than control their children and have a range of strategies to build relationships and they give children a voice in their family enterprise.
3. Discussion/Conversation. The research states that this is the essence of effective parenting. If you do nothing else talk with your children about a whole range of ‘stuff’.
4. Promoting citizenship and respect for others. The ability of parents to teach kids the concept of altruism and that there is more to life than meeting their own needs is strongly linked to children’s social competencies such as friendships.
5. Persistence and responsibility. These two values are huge drivers for children’s well-being and achievement. The study showed that over 35 per cent of children’s success in school is directly attributed directly to their ability to persist as a learner, and less than 10 per cent is attributed to IQ.

From the Deputy Principal |
Hello Friends
I hope you made it through the Wintery blast last week. I haven’t seen weather like we had here at school last Thursday and Friday before. Walking thorough the double doors near the multipurpose room last Thursday took some real effort as a result of the wind.
When the weather is inclement (which always seems to occur at 3.00pm, right on pick up time) we encourage students to stay under the veranda for Seaview Rd collection and under the small veranda out the front of the school for Military Rd collection. I ask that parents exercise patience and extra care during inclement weather when collecting children from school. Student, parent and staff safety is very important to us.
Canberra 2019
Students from our school will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding a small amount per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
Our 2019 Year 6 students will be leaving for Canberra on 11 September and returning to Adelaide on 13 September. We are excited by the trip and look forward to being in our nation’s capital, visiting places including Parliament House, the War Museum, Questacon and the High Court of Australia. We know our Year 6 students will have a fabulous time away and be fantastic ambassadors for our school and their families. We thank Louise Santillo, Sam Muir, Kopano Shepheard, Barb Conlon, Deb Tucker and Viv Iasiello for attending the 2019 Canberra Trip.

From the APRIM |
We are blessed to be so close to the sea. Stella Maris, Our Lady, Star of the Sea, protector and guide of all on the seas; a guiding star leading us to Jesus. Last night Henley Beach was aglow. It was stunningly beautiful, and you could almost sense the beginning of the change from Winter to Spring; or is that my wishful thinking? These nights must still be so very cold though for all those who haven’t the warmth of family and home. Let us keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
Today we celebrated the Assumption of Mary into heaven with a wonderful Whole School Mass and with the Parish. Our Year Twos sang so sweetly for all our mothers, our band and singers brought joyful vitality to our celebration and Hannah Timpani shared her video on ‘kindness.’
Thank you to everyone who has been supporting our Catherine House drive. The SRC are delighted with the response and Year Three has filled multiple laundry baskets with essential items for people who need a new start and are striving for independence once again.

Mary Visits Elizabeth
At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfil his promises to her!” Luke 1:39-56
